• Kolomoki Mounds State Park – Ga.

Kolomoki Mounds State Park in southwest Georgia surrounds an ancient Indian mound complex and has two lakes and 24 RV sites. The sites are level and shaded, and most offer a great view of Kolomoki Lake. The park office/museum houses an excavated burial mound and you can climb to the top of the 57-foot-tall temple mound.
The park was practically empty during our stay in early May.

Purple Martins nest in these gourds; we used to call then Gourd Martins. Martins eat lots of bugs, especially mosquitos, and you’ll see gourds on poles and wires throughout the southeast.

This is part of the excavated burial mound.

The “temple mound.”  It’s thought that the chief and his wives and families lived atop the mound.

  • Lake Louisa State Park – Fla.

Lake Louisa is a fairly new state park ca. 1997 or so located in the former citrus-growing area near Clermont in Central Florida.  As such it’s rather barren; no shade trees here.

Freezes in the ’80s and ’90s along with citrus canker killed all the orange trees, followed by developers who snapped up the land for retirement and bedroom communities to Orlando.   Previously citrus trees stretched as far as the eye could see from the Citrus Tower in Clermont; now it’s all rooftops.

The state purchased 4500 acres from the Bronson family for the new park.

We saw quite a few bicyclists taking advantage of the miles of paved roads in the park, plus there are several lakes offering canoeing and fishing.

  • Gamble Rogers SRA – Flagler Beach

Gamble Rogers SRA – Flagler Beach in Florida! Great ocean view camping! Lots of sand, small spaces, has a bath house, firepit, water and electric. If you are traveling down Florida’s East Coast, this is a nice place to spend a few days. We had a great time just walking along the beach. You’ll see beautiful sunrises and shopping is just around the corner!
