• Mrs Wilkes Dinning Room, Savannah, Ga.

This is one of the best restaurants I’ve eaten at in the South! I passed up Paul Dean’s restaurant for this one based on all the recommendations we got from other folks that had eaten there! We stood in line for an hour and 15 minutes and it was worth every minute we waited. Click Here to see their website for more details!

If you see a long line waiting on West Jones Street at around 11 o’clock, it’s the lunch crowd and they are only open between 11 and 2 so get there early. It’s located at 107 W. Jones Street and they are only open Monday through Friday. They have large tables-for-ten and shared in groups. The tables are filled with large bowls and platters of fried chicken and cornbread, collard greens, sweet potato souffle, black-eyed peas, okra gumbo, corn muffins and biscuits. The menu changes daily so regulars can have something different every day, and visitors are sure to enjoy what ever is served up. Be sure to stop by and enjoy this family styled restaurant. You’ll be seated with strangers but leave as friends!

We did find out that my husband was sitting in the exact chair President Obama sat in!

  • Clarys in Savannah, Ga.

Clary’s was featured on Andrew Zimmern on the Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods in America, so it naturally had to be on our list. Not for the bizzare foods as much as the culture and old fashioned southern cooking! Click Here to go to their website for more information.

Clarys, Featured in the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Also, Bizarre Foods in America with Andrew Zimmern!

We sat and talked with our waiter for a few minutes and learned some interesting facts. He just so happened to work at Clary’s during the filming of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil! He was also present when Andrew Zimmern featured Clarys on the Bizarre Foods in America on the Travel Channel March 12. 2012

We learned that all of the folks in the restaurant during the filming were folks brought in. A nice mix of different age groups, etc. Not necessarily locals! Staff could only peak around the corner to watch the show being taped.

We also learned that locals do not necessarily agree with Andrews vision of the story he was trying to tell of Savannah’s culture. They feel a little slighted, even with how Madam Chablis seems to always steal all the national attention in both Andrews show and the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

In my personal opinion, I agreed with Andrew because I felt I understood his reasons behind how his show was constructed to best tell the story he wanted to tell. He approached it from a different angle than the locals may have wanted, but, in the end he pointed out a dying culture! And that is what America should focus on.

The food was good. We had their breakfast so can’t speak for the other items on the menu. But, real folks serving real food that taste good! Plus, smiling faces.

We were served Crab Cakes Eggs Benedict and also Fried Green Tomato Sandwich! They were both great. We enjoyed our Rum n Coke and Margarita on a hot day. Service was great and staff curtious.
